7 Tweaks that Can Take Your Dating Profile to the Next Level

Maximize your profile and stand out from the crowd

Online dating has not only revolutionized the way we meet - it’s also provided a unique glance into how we date - or rather, how we choose the people we want to date. Dating sites are sitting on huge piles of numbers that help explain the way we swipe, browse, match and message - and if used correctly can help you hack the dating game, and find your way to one of the good ones online.

Here are the top 7 tweaks to create the perfect profile.

1.Get rid of the sunglasses - and anything that hides your face

Even on a site like Zoosk that’s less swipe-heavy and more about the whole profile, the photos are the first thing anyone looks at. Data from Zoosk shows that people who wear sunglasses get 63% fewer messages - most likely because they hide your identity and make it harder for others to relate.  The same logic applies for hats, group shots and any photo that’s too zoomed out.

Bonus tip: Zoosk found that narrow photos, where it looks like you’ve cut out your ex, perform the worst — while full-body photos get 203% more incoming messages than the average, and 33% more responses to their outgoing messages.

2. Put your passions front and center

You don’t need to be a world traveler who spends your free time teaching ballet to at risk youth to get noticed online. But you should lead with your passions to give people a better sense of who you are and what you enjoy.

This tip is especially fitting for men. Zoosk found that profiles of singles engaging in hobbies, like surfing or playing music, get more matches than your standard profile pics of beer in hand, hanging out at your friend’s BBQ.

3. Be Active — Or At Least, Smile

If you’re sporty, show that off. Data from Hinge says that photos of people playing sports fare 75 percent better than other photos.

If you’re not sporty, focus on that smile. Smiles with teeth are 75 percent more successful.

4. To selfie or not to selfie? Well, it depends...

Oddly, when it comes to selfies, women get more messages when they upload a selfie shot, while men get less. But there is one thing both genders seem to agree - nobody likes a car selfies. Eyes on the road people!

5. Men - show your business and playful sides

Elite Singles - a dating site aimed at career-driven singles - found that women were 75% more likely to respond to messages from men who had photos of them wearing suits and also a photo taken outdoors in natural surroundings. The pairing suggests that a man is ambitious and motivated, while also showing off a sense of adventure - an irresistible combo.

6. More is better

Uploading a variety of photos helps people see more of who you are and what you like to do.

Zoosk found that those with four or more photos received the most interest from their matches. Make the first shot a solo shot, and then add in photos from your travels, or passions or even one of you in a sports jersey, with full face paint, rooting for your home team - trust us, someone out there is into it too.

7. Most Importantly, Be Yourself

A huge surrey from Elite Singles found that humor was the most important characteristic in a dating profile  — in fact, 48 percent of men and 37 percent of women rated it, so don't be afraid to get a little weird and show off your funny side.

Survey after survey shows that the most important thing you can is be yourself — and that's true for photos and profiles. Get weird, get specific, and have fun with it. The data doesn't lie, being funny and approachable will not only allow you to show off the real you, it will get you better matches.

Bonus advice: We can’t mention this enough - if you’re a woman on a dating site, make the first move please! In its annual “Singles in America” survey, Match asked men, “How would you feel if a woman asked you out?” Ninety-five percent of men said they would be happy to have a woman ask them out. Yet, only 13 percent of women would be willing to do that. Ladies take charge! I mean, it’s 2018 people!
